About Rich Phillipps
Rich Phillipps has spent more than 20 years helping people change their bodies through precisely planned training and nutrition. Named by Men’s Health as the UK’s leading expert in body transformation, his reputation comes from the results: clients becoming leaner, stronger and more confident, with their progress documented in national publications and on the gym floor.
His experience spans professional and Olympic athletes, fitness models, film body doubles and people taking their first serious steps into strength training. That range has developed the judgement behind his work: understanding what a person needs, identifying what is limiting their progress and applying the right training stimulus to move them forward. The same approach runs through every programme, whether clients train in our private gyms or with a ROAR trainer online.
Rich co-founded ROAR Fitness with three-time Olympian Sarah Lindsay in 2016. Together, they developed the ROAR Method, drawing on his body transformation expertise and her Olympic experience. His system underpins how every ROAR trainer assesses clients, coaches technique and programmes progression, guiding the standards delivered across our personal training gyms in London and Dubai, and online.

The Experience Behind the ROAR Method
Rich’s expertise has developed through competition, demanding physique preparation and decades of coaching. He brings that experience into the decisions that determine a client’s progress and the standards under which every ROAR trainer works.

A Background in Competitive Sport
A former National League basketball player, Rich understands the relationship between physical preparation and performance. His subsequent work with professional and Olympic athletes broadened that experience across different bodies, sporting demands and training goals.
Physique Preparation for Film
Rich has prepared body doubles for productions including Captain America and The Dark Knight Rises. This work demands a clear physical brief, disciplined preparation and attention to the detail that determines how a physique develops.
Published Transformation Programmes
Rich’s coaching underpinned journalist Ben Ince’s eight-week transformation, documented by Men’s Fitness and Coach and developed into the publication Your 8-Week Body Plan. It brought his approach to exercise selection, progression and nutrition to readers beyond the gym.

Coaching Standards Across ROAR
Alongside Sarah Lindsay, Rich translates that practical knowledge into the ROAR Method. Trainers learn to assess movement, coach technique, plan progression and interpret results. Each client works with a personal trainer and a separate nutrition coach, with clear responsibilities for delivering the programme.
In January 2023 ROAR opened in Burj Vista, Downtown Dubai, bringing the same one-to-one personal training to Dubai.

Rich’s Rules for Body Transformation
Rich’s approach gives every part of a programme a purpose. Training must provide the right stimulus, nutrition must support the goal and progress must be measured closely enough to guide the next decision. Every ROAR trainer works to these rules, whether clients do their personal training in London, in Dubai or online.
01 Measure Everything
Establish a clear starting point, then track improvements in body composition, strength and performance. Measurements show how the programme is working and give clients evidence of what their commitment is achieving. Adjustments follow the results. “The way he tracked my stats gave me the impetus to dig deeper,” wrote Mark Sansom.

02 Lose Fat, Keep Muscle
“You want to burn fat, not lose existing muscle mass” is how Rich put it to Coach. That one aim shapes the diet as much as the training.

03 Protein at Every Meal
Protein goes into every meal, with a handful or two of greens on each plate and carbs from clean sources such as oats and sweet potatoes.

04 Keep the Body Adapting
Progress requires a training challenge that develops with you. Exercise selection, load, repetitions, tempo and recovery are managed deliberately. Build on what is working, increase the demands when you are ready and make changes for a clear reason.
Rich to Coach, January 2016
These principles underpin the ROAR Method: detailed coaching, coordinated nutrition and recovery, and measurable progress towards the result you want, whether that is to lose body fat or build strength and muscle.
